Surely mixed is better? If school is meant to prepare you for being an adult. The idea of same sex schools seems really outdated to me. I don't understand what the benefit is supposed to be

No. You don't get to live your life surrounded by people of the same gender as you unless you follow an extremely limited path in life - like joining convent for example. Why limit yourself like that? Why limit your children like that? I'm not sure why any parent would choose an education like that for their children, unless they have a misguided belief in the purity of single sex education and that it will somehow protect their children from growing up too quickly...

I went to an all boys school and I turned out alright, I think I'd have preferred going to a mixed school but at the same time that might have been more difficult

I've been to both,

same sex for 9 years and mixed for 3 years so far.

Same sex is way less bitchy and dramatic, well boys was.

Mixed is more interesting but same sex works.

I went to a mixed school and had a terrible time... but only ever had a problem with the girls. So no, I'd have hated going to an all-girls school.

Yeah I think it only works with boys tbh, the all girls school down the road had problems and the girls were very sort of stuck up/reserved and clique and didn't mix well.

How could you possibly know it only works for boys :/ I went to an all girls primary and it was fine. I went to a mixed secondary, most people were fine but there was just as many male idiots as female, probably more actually.

The advantages of a same sex secondary school I think is that you might feel more self conscious as a teenager participating in class with the opposite sex in the class. I think there are pros and cons for both thougj

Mixed, I would personally hate to go to an all boys school. I don't think I'd feel as comfortable and I just don't think there's any need for same sex as once you're in the work world it's going to be mixed gender. My school was all boys back in the 1960s or something like.

I went to an all girls primary and senior so I don't really have a comparison. Instead of getting crushes on boys, we got crushes on the male teachers!

I always knew I'd send my children to mixed sex schools, so although I enjoyed my school years, I guess my subconscious was telling me something.

My primary school ended in year 8.

I don't think they're that comparable because they're different environments with their own pros and cons. I don't think one is less suitable than the other; it depends on the individual and what environment they work best in.

From a social skills perspective, I think its important that kids get exposure to the broadest base of pupils at school male and female, From an educational perspective, the closer the range to the individuals, the more successful they will be, so education will be more successful in single sex schools.

Also went to an all-boys school (although there was an all-girls one just down the road), it didn't really make much of an impact on my learning I think. Less flirting I guess (well, for most...) but at the same time more male machismo nonsense and bad behaviour I think. For the most part the school was strict with discipline and 100% better than others locally and had some of the best results in the country so not to worry.

Hmm... In theory, wouldn't someone who had been in same sex education their whole life find it strange jumping into a mixed environment at University, and potentially find themselves out of their comfort zone / distracted at the time when they least need either of those setbacks?

..I don't think it's something really that can be generalised..for some children, same sex schools work well and for others they don't so much...for a child to be able to learn, reach their potential etc..they have to feel safe, secure, confident and self assured in their environment and among their peers...and for some, it can be that they feel those things more with other children of the same gender, so would thrive in a way that they may not in a mixed gender school...

...I think in a looking back way, it's also good to look at ourselves as adults..and how we thrive, feel comfortable, confident etc with either sex now..if we're a female, do we feel more comfortable/relaxed/self assured etc in the company of other females..?..do we feel awkward around the opposite sex..and etc etc...obviously, there are other factors as well with this and it isn't all about school but I do think it plays a part...we will absorb, we will learn, we will thrive if the environment we're in is more compatible with our individual personality...for many people who are equally comfortable around both sexes, then either a mixed or a single sex school would work well for them...

I'd say interaction with peers of both genders is vital, same sex schools are not representative of society so you have to ask what service do they provide?
