They do receive benefits... they'll get over £1000 a month in child benefit. "Family Allowance" as it used to be called was introduced after the war when we needed to boost our population. We don't need to do that now, just the reverse. Great these people work and pay their way... but why are we still paying a dividend for having a kid, seeing that overpopulation is going to be a problem?

They're entitled to that though just like everyone else, even millionaires (I assume it's the same as over here)

It's certainly a valid argument but it shouldn't be specific to this family, everyone who has kids gets it whether they need it or not

Yes, they're entitled to it. Everyone is who has a child... it isn't specific to this family it's just that this family is the one we're discussing. I don't begrudge them in particular.

Philosophically? I agree; the planet is grossly overpopulated with human beings. Economically, this just isn't true, the population needs to maintain steady growth or at the very least remain constant. An aging / declining population is impossible to maintain in economic terms. Aging population is at the very core of Japan's (quite significant) economic issues, for example.

Lower the native birth rate and you need to up immigration. And we know that no one wants that...

I don't think anyone is going to begrudge them child benefit. After all, every birth certificate is like a government bond. In other words, every registered baby in the UK is collateral for future government borrowing and that's why our children have their own NI number. The government expects that every one of those children will pay back tenfold what was a donated from them in child benefit. Its estimated each new birth was worth three quarters of a million to the British government.

If every one of those children pay average tax throughout their lifetime, between them they will pay around £14.5 million

And you would imagine a family that's raising 20 children and running a business will be passing on a good, hard working ethic

Fair play to them, the organisation and structure of their family was lovely to see, you could feel the warmth in their home through the screen.
On the subject of family allowance I think that families need that now more than ever, it's given with one hand and taken back with the with VAT on nappies and baby milk so it's not really of any benefit is it?

FFFFSSSS I have now replied to this 3 times the forum keeps eating my reply!

OK even shorter this time...

Child Bennefits rules changed in 2013.

If they earn over £60k profit from their business they don't get child benefits.

Based on not getting other credits, it is safe to assume their business does earn more than £60k profit.

TL;DR - They don't get child benefits no matter how many kids they have (this is how the equation works. Starts to reduce at £50k, nothing at all over £60k)

Quote:
If you have an income of between £50,000 and £60,000 a year, the amount of extra tax you'll have to pay will be 1 per cent of the amount of Child Benefit you get for every £100 of your income above £50,000.
Now POST! Goddamn you forum...

To be fair, I'm pretty sure both formula and nappies are 0% VAT. Don't have time to check up on that though...

Vat is applied to some energy bills too, for the poorest too

It does affect far too many things that shouldn't be considered "luxuries", I know. Especially when it comes to bigger expenses like beds / mattresses and things like that. Hardly a luxury! But, it doesn't or shouldn't apply to most foods which formula falls under, children's clothes, nappies and things like that. Unless there have been changes recently that I'm not aware of, those are all VAT free.

Can't find anything that specifically relates to baby formula, but yes nappies are zero rated I thought they would come under the 5%.

it also keeps businesses small and stops them competing with the big boys
