New York Times publishes series of images showing remains of bomb, detonator and what appears to be rucksack

Extraordinary details about the bomb used in the Manchester atrocity have been published in the New York Times, almost all of it forensic evidence gathered by the British police at the scene.

A series of photographs of the remains of the bomb, the detonator and what appeared to be a rucksack were leaked. The preliminary investigation by the police is extremely detailed, down to the belief that the killer, Salman Abedi, held the small detonator in his left hand.

Suspicion on who leaked it to the US-based reporter rested on US officials, who have been feeding a series of details about the Manchester bombing to American journalists.

Leaking such inside information from the investigation will add to tensions between the US and UK over the extent to which much of the investigation is being leaked by authorities in America.



Given all New York went through personally I find it a bit insensitive at best, at worst its given needless information to the cells about what information the UK police have about the bombing

we should know all this anyway and its just a distraction from the far more serious issues at hand, such as why 95% of the jihadis are still free and at large in the uk

It's a breach of trust and it does matter because it means that other extremists who might have been involved now have an inkling into what evidence has remained and how much police know about the bomb itself and how the attack was carried out

I don't remember this but apparently they did similar after 7/7 and that the US authorities often just think nothing of leaking this sort of thing to the press

Hadn't even considered this - initially approached the leaks from an ethical POV and I couldn't find anything too bad about the pictures themselves, but this is a good point.

I am glad the UK has stopped sharing information with the US until they find the leaker

Anything to make money, first they disclosed his name then more details of the attack.
There is a time for us to know all the truth, and that is after the scum that caused this atrocity are rounded up, not beforehand, giving them chance to escape.

There will have been a finite number of people with access to those pics. I'd like to see it made a priority to find out who it was that leaked them, and to shame them. Those pictures were never meant for the public, and certainly not for the victims' families.

Why exactly do you think you'll be safer having seen pictures of bomb components ? Please do tell.
It's far more important for the public's safety that highly classified info (which is thus designated for a very good reason!!!) remain classified.
