Migrants stop working harder than British people after they have been in the country for two years, research has shown.

A study by the University of Bath found Central and Eastern Europe migrants' tendency to take fewer absent days from work than British workers may be nothing more than a temporary phenomenon.

When their attendance rates were measured over two to four years they were more than three times less likely to be absent from work than native UK workers.

But after this period their absences from work increased to similar levels recorded for native UK workers. It means native UK workers may be unfairly overlooked for jobs because employers have a preconception that migrants are harder workers.

Employment experts suggested migrants were making a special effort to avoid sick days in the initial stages of their UK employment to prove that they were worth hiring over UK workers and to make up for their lack of language skills.

Dr Chris Dawson, senior lecturer in Business Economics at the University of Bath, said: "Our work backs up managers' perceptions that Polish and other Central and Eastern European migrants are harder working than UK employees, but importantly only for around two years from their arrival in the UK.

What are your thoughts on this?

No surprise really as it is only to be expected that those wanting to get work, and trying to make a good impression, will make an extra effort. Self interest is the key rather than being harder workers per se. Did anyone actually believe it was anything else!

I think a lot ofg employers just use the "harder workers" "do work brits wont" to hide the fact they can pay them less/work them more and make more profit

Yeah pretty much this. It's all a smokescreen to get as much work as possible out of them for the least pay.

I wonder though... is it that they're putting in "extra" effort to make a good impression, or IS that their normal level, but then once they;ve been here a while our lack of work ethic starts to rub off on them?

So you could argue... it's just that they've become "more British"

Well yeah that's what I was saying earlier (half jokingly but half not) Like I reckon if I moved to Spain I'd get into their nice laid back attitude no bother

Like the UK workers you mean? cos that's what it says in the article, they now work just like their UK colleagues

You could - but it would just be supposition. From what I have seen there is no reason to believe they are harder workers other than to get their foot in the door in the first place. Once in and feeling more secure they ‘relax’ a bit more - it was always just a case of ‘wishful thinking’ for those with a left agenda.

...it’s good that the migrants have better work ethics than you Scottish people, TS....we always knew those are the stories of your average working days...which is why we keep you Scotland../...so that you don’t integrate...we’ll have the migrants...but please Lord not the pesky Scottish and their game consoles...

You joke (I think) Ammi but my ACTUAL 10 hour working day is literally about 2 hours of work, 1 hour of lunch, and 7 hours of ****ing about on TiBB and Imgur...

It's worse when you're in charge because there's no one to impress! Sometimes I pretend to be doing compliance stuff in the staff room but I'm actually watching "10 things you never noticed in the MCU!" on YouTube

Yeah, I think at first they work harder to make a good impression and to go further/earn more, just like most do when in a new job. Then just like most, migrant or not, over time they revert to their natural individual pace - there are hardworking migrants and hardworking British, and lazier migrants and lazier British.

I agree. From my experience being a hard worker has more to do with character and individual motive rather than nationality.
