I met a guy who actually had completely unnecessary surgery on his spine because he was addicted to painkillers.

He had gone to a doctor, complaining of back pain in order to get a prescription to oxycontin, and he would keep telling his doctor that the pain was really bad so his doctor keep giving him more. Then finally his doctor was like "well the pills arn't working, we need to do surgery to relieve your pain" and instead of coming clean about his lie, he actually went ahead with the surgery just to keep getting the pills, and continued lying about the pain even AFTER the surgery.
