I think that I was expecting something on the maturity level of the old guy from Up with the way that people went on about the Film.
And imo if your characters aren't likeable or interesting to me then the story has got massive issues, even if it's the intention of the writer for it to be the case.
I know that I'm being uber harsh on a Kids Movie though so I probably should lower my standards a bit.
