I don't necessarily agree with cold-hard-cash generational inherited debt, however, in this case as the family is still occupying the land, I think it would be reasonable enough to ask that it's given back. If it was going to cause huge financial issues then that would be another matter - but I suspect he could give the land back and still be a very wealthy chap.
I guess a happy medium would be offering to sell it back to them then they get "their" land back, and he won't be out of pocket.
