Commas aren't used for 'clarity'. They are used for a whole variety of reasons.

The 'spelt/spelled' is only a slight issue as the British prefer one version, the Americans another. Similar to 'authorise' / 'authorize'. Technically, both are correct, it simply depends on the UK/USA English versions.
