Likes cars that go boom

The other day My son, niece and I went to a local mill shop. Whilst there my son tried on a novelty hat, came to show me, and we laughed.
The store owner came over and asked him to remove it and said something about hygiene... Without thinking I apologised and told my son to put it back. Thing is, now I'm annoyed at myself for doing that as my son was upset and embarrassed, he really did want to buy the hat. The store has shoes and clothes for sale, are people supposed to buy those without trying them on?... Thing is my niece asked if I wanted to go to store again on thurs, do I go and explain how I feel to the owner?
