I don't think she twisted it intentionally though. I actually think she IS that stupid to have heard what they said but not be able to understand it. She heard what they said clearly, but due to her limited intelligence she was unable to grasp the (let's be honest) pretty f#$*ing obvious meaning of what they were saying.
When one accepts that Helen basically lacks any real critical thinking skills, the rest of her appalling behaviour becomes almost understandable. She needs to be out of the house, as there are far more important issues for her to deal with in her train-wreck of a life.
