Surely Sue/Mel's and Mary/Paul's fees aren't extravagantly high? The cost of the appliances does add up but surely doesn't come to much. They literally bake in a tent, so I don't understand how that would cost money unless they rent land property. Am I totally getting the wrong idea here? Does the BBC fund all of these things?

As far as I'm aware, it doesn't - the production team are just demanding a ridiculous amount for the rights now that it's so popular and lucrative
