He was kidding around with his friend. I get that it indirectly effects / offends others but it's not like he was being malicious. I don't like the word either though and I'm not gay so I imagine it's worse to hear for a gay person in particular.

However, Tom must not be too bad of a person if this inappropriate joking with his friend is the worst thing people could find from probably searching years back on his social media.
