Thing is as the show went on the whole argument became whether they were on a break or not when that wasn't actually the issue at the time. It was Rachel who said 'let's take a break' but the point was that wasn't acceptable even so. I agree with TS that the Mark thing would have messed with his head and made it legit but in the following years the only thing he used in his justification was being on a break which was not legit

I just watched an episode where Ross makes it a joke that they were on a break and Rachel and the rest of the gang get up and walk away saying 'That's not funny' so I assume later on it was meant to be represented that Rachel was in the right but Ross being Ross would not let it go.
