Oh I know, but she's 44, it's not that likely that anything will happen to her. Hopefully she has close family as well who would step up in that case

That's the point though, she will have to ask someone to take the child on should something happen to her, its not unknown for people to die in their 40s Niamh! I wouldn't want to be put in that position no matter how close a family I have

It's not unknown for people to die at ANY age.

Well, it sort of sounded like you didn't given you mentioned how risky it was for her to have a baby in her 40s since "people die in their 40s Niamh!". People die any time, so unless at risk of dying from old age or a terminal illness, it's a silly thing to throw at someone for having a baby. There's no reason for a relatively healthy 44 year old woman not to be able to raise that child into adulthood and be around for a long time.
