Default Green charge…

Went to the hairdressers today. Checked my receipt when I got home and found a £1.00 Green charge added. Phoned them up to ask what it was and they are adding this on to everyone’s bill for “being Green” by disposing of hair and metal (foil used for highlighting) in an eco friendly way. It is optional although no one mentioned this or gave me the choice when I settled my bill.
However…why should I pay for this? If the salon owner wants to do it then fine…but don’t charge the customer who already pays a substantial amount already. They must have at least 50 customers per day which amounts to about £1,200.00 a month. Is that the cost of being eco friendly?…or is the owner profiting from it…
