Went to the hairdressers today. Checked my receipt when I got home and found a £1.00 Green charge added. Phoned them up to ask what it was and they are adding this on to everyone’s bill for “being Green” by disposing of hair and metal (foil used for highlighting) in an eco friendly way. It is optional although no one mentioned this or gave me the choice when I settled my bill.
However…why should I pay for this? If the salon owner wants to do it then fine…but don’t charge the customer who already pays a substantial amount already. They must have at least 50 customers per day which amounts to about £1,200.00 a month. Is that the cost of being eco friendly?…or is the owner profiting from it… ![]() |

Can’t see the issue with it.
You could also dye your hair at home if paying for the service the salon provides is too much.

I would not pay. Sounds like a con. I bet there are loads of people who've paid who wouldn't have, given the option.

It sounds like a bit of a con , especially if it was sneakily done.
I've not heard of a " green charge" before, but then again I'm not a regular Salon goer. Last edited by GoldHeart; 13-01-2025 at 10:37 PM. |

I didn’t say I had a problem paying to have my hair done by a professional..my point was that if the business wants to be eco friendly then foot the bill and don’t pass it on to the client…sounds like the business is making the profit on top of the profit they are already making. Do the maths… |

…it’s not something that I was aware of in terms of a hair salon, rusty… so I googled it…I think more than anything your salon has been really not good and communicating the charge/explaining the purpose of what it will be used for etc…
…this is what one site says… COST NEUTRAL - Salons pay a one-off registration fee, after that you buy a returns box for recycling hair or metal. Once the box is full Green Salon Collective collect the box from you. To make recycling cost neutral in your salon, we recommend charging a 50p or £1.00 ‘green fee’ to your clients. PROFITS - Green Salon Collective and Salon Success will donate any profits from recycling to industry, environmental and community groups as well as planting trees. …so basically, what I’m taking from that is that a salon’s intention isn’t to profit from going for their ‘green status’…but of course, it’s open to that, isn’t it and because it hasn’t been communicated to you (customers) very well by the sound of it, then that’s already breached a bit of trust, hasn’t it…so yeah, the salon will have a registration fee to pay for their ‘Green status’ and they’re passing that down/distributing that fee with their customers of £1 each for their visits…fair…?…well, maybe/maybe not if we want services to continue but it needs to be communicated and the client given a choice if they want to support it with the extra £1…so it sounds like shabby communication…. …on a separate thing…looking good there, rusty…?…. ![]() |

If its optional, they should have given you the option, not sure why customers should have to pay for the Salon disposing of their waste in a green way, that is the Salon owners choice, the energy company I use, has 100 per cent green electricity yet we still pay the same as if it wasn't, how does that work?

The salon has fallen into the trap of saying we are green so we know best how we spend your money, and you can't complain because it's green and you are morally bound to accept it.
The salon has taken the business decision to go green, so they either absorb the cost or charge the customer. They want everyone to know they are green, thats why they put it on the bill, but i really don't like the idea of it being shoved in my face as a mandatory charge and there will be a fair proprtion of customers that don't like it either |

…I don’t think it’s a mandatory charge but it should have been a charge that was communicated properly to the clients/the public…maybe it’s an ‘opt out’ charge so it’s left to the clients to specifically say…I don’t want that added, please remove etc…but if that was to be the way, then they need to be made aware in the first place…
![]() …some businesses…(…I think, maybe…)…will be able to absorb the green charges themselves and some won’t…not one size fits all…hair salons especially are run differently, aren’t they …as some rent out their spaces and some employ….anyway, in a world that needs to support sustainability and ‘go green’, one of the difficulties obviously is that ‘going green’ can be an extra expense and cost to a business and the public using that business are already stretched so it’s a bit of a catch, really…anyway, with this…I think it’s obviously bad communication and if it’s an option but not a compulsory thing then it should be added with agreement and not an opt out thing…. |

Thats very interesting Ammi...thank you. The Salon should be giving this information to their clients and then let them decide as it is apparently optional. |

It's like supermarket bags, when they initially started charging, the money went to charity, now you hear nothing as they charge you 40p for a small plastic

I don’t disagree with the charge but I agree they should be making customers aware of it, and that it’s optional.
