From being from the same area as Cameron, watching him on Big Brother this year has been frustrating. He talks a lot about the family farm and how he wants to win the £100k to “save it from inheritance tax.” Personally, I don’t agree with the principle of that tax — it can be tough on farmers — but in this case, Cameron’s story is a story. He is tricking the public to gain sympathy and win the money.
The family’s old farm (the Somerset farm he talks about (Halse Farm))was on the market for over £10million and sold several months ago, I believe the family have now moved whilst he has been in the Big Brother house. They have brought a smaller farm up north which I think is fair to assume costs a lot less. From my perspective, this makes the “we need the money to save the farm” story completely false. I know him to be an active member of the Conservative Party, even knocking on doors. I find it quite odd that he is passionate enough to canvass for them yet doesn't talk mention them on BB. Having seen his tearful outburst, I felt compelled to tell everyone what I know. I don't trust a word he has said I will be voting for Richard. |

…isn’t the new family farm quite a bit less money so already ‘down-farming’ which is basically what he’s saying is happening…anyway, was Jordan wealthy…?…I’m pretty sure that Henry’s family were …but I don’t really vote based on wealth etc…Richard seems pretty successful also, I think…so yeah, thank you for feeling so compelled …I think this is all being posted on many forums anyway and many platforms…gosh, the research and application to detail etc and background information…

…why would he need inheritance tax unless he was inheriting the farm because he parents were deceased…/…I’m confused…

…and it’s still that his family are relocating or have relocated to a farm of much less value…maybe that’s to try to put money aside for Cameron to be able to pay the tax to inherit…?…and he wants to try to raise the funds himself, which could take a lot of time and this is a step to that if he was to win…?…

…I mean, the clue…(…as Marcus said…)…was in him and his siblings all going to boarding school at a huge expense to their parents, which he said right at the beginning…so I guess that I always assumed they were a wealthy farming family…but they have relocated to a new farm that’s almost half the value of their previous one so maybe they have got many debts etc …

I think Cameron's point has been that farmers are land and asset rich but cash poor. There won't be any way of paying the tax for a lot of them without selling some of that land but if you do that you might not have a viable farm anymore, as it only really becomes profitable when you do it at scale particularly as an arable farmer
The fact he went to boarding school makes me slightly doubt his story though as you certainly need to be cash rich for that! |

A 800 acre farm would cost £500,000 per year just to run

You can't judge someones wealth purely on the property that they own. It may be mortgaged, it may have several financial stakeholders. It may not provide them with the liquidity necessary to pay running costs. Depending on how their farm is owned, it may have been subject to capital gains tax when it was sold. We are not privvy to to any of that information. All we know is that they sold one farm and bought another smaller one

I am still catching back up but have watched letters episode last night. His explanation made no sense because he seemed to contradict himself and could tell it wasn't giving the full story. Also, hard to believe he canvassed with his argumentation skills, but I could see him being more tolerant than average with having the door slammed on him regularly. That takes tolerance that most don't have.
