Default Lack of strong male characters?

Anyone else think this? It seems like BB8's female centric house all over again. Whilst it's been a good series thus far, I'm finding it hard to get into or care about as much as I did BB10.

Marcus, Siavash, Freddie, Rex, Darnell, and more were all very dominant male characters from the last two years and were, in some peoples opinions obviously, 'cool' guys you could get behind.

John James is cool, but he is about as interesting as an out of service elavator. Govan is not actually a male homo sapien.

There's just this strange 'missing thing' about the series I can't put my finger on. It's like too many housemates are from the same spectrum and should only be half the actual cast.

And the house ... I no longer like. It looks great in pictures but on camera it looks so ... un BB like. In terms of live feed viewing I actually rathered the BB10 house.

Yeah. Glad that's off my chest.

I agree! John James for me is the only strong male character.

I would've thought Nathan but seems to much of a nice guy. And Steve is way too quiet.

I'm not sure I agree. I would say Nathan, Steve and John were all reasonably tough and assertive..

And I wouldn't call Siavash, Freddie and Marcus strong male characters. They were very easily led on by vixens like Noirin and Bea. Although, Marcus slightly made up for it in having the measure of Bea, not to mention Siavash, later on. Siavash, it goes without saying, is one of the emotionally weakest male housemates in recent memory.

You are quite right about BB8 though. That series was a testosterone vacuum.

@BBEye.

Bear in mind I'm using the term 'strong male characters' in the screen prescence sense, not the sociological sense. I should have been clearer, sorry.

Freddie, Siavash and Marcus were three distinct, colourful characters who were omnipresent on the highlight shows.

In comparison, John James, Steve and Nathan are absoloute bores.

John James is too nice a naive tourist, Steve has already melted into the sofa and will in all likelyhood stay there for the next three months, and Nathan is like Bez without the amphetamines.

I didn't watch much BB9. But Marcus, Freddie and Siavash were all wimps as far as Im concerned. Strong characters yeah but far from dominant! Any woman, including Noirin, could walk all over them.

But yeah Ive said myself that this house needs an alphamale. JJ is like a big dopey dog. Ben has a stick up his ass and is far too self conscious. The others...meh.

A masculine, dominant male good looker would be great to throw in the mix very soon. Would unsettle all the guys and get the females fighting for his attention. Not another Tom though. He was too reserved and above it all...or so he thought.

Yeah. Glad that's off my chest.
I disagree violently. Society seems to think that men are the be all and end all of this and every other universe, the last thing we need are bullies (yes I'm using the "B" word) in the house; every single year blokes stride into the house, are rude, spitful, hypocritical, patronising, violent event and every-single-year the viewing public goes "what a great guy", "great t.v", "what a character".

Every-single-year the women get slaughtered for anything and everything; if they're quiet then they're boring/antisocial, if they're lively then they're too loud/attention grabbing/show-off, if they try to do thing around the house, they're controlling, if they don't then they're lazy/selfish, if they get angry they're bad tempered,if they get upset they're cry-babies, if they have a brain and have the qualifications to prove it then they're devious and have a game plan, if they voluteer information about themselves then they're seen as vain, if they as lots of questions about people then they're seen as nosey.

We don't need men to make this show worth watching. I think what makes the show worth watching is the personalities off -all- the housemates and how they interact with each in a calm, sane way, how they handle the challenges and their ability to be creative and interesting in -that- kind of minimalist environment.

Afteral, this is supposed to be a "socail experiment" not a platform for some bloke to lose his temper, threaten, verbally abuse, or patronise people he's never met before, just beacuse they "piss him off" or aren't as smart/settled/acomplished as he is.

The closest thing BB11 has to a protagonist right now is Mario and it's clear that, although he is likeable, he is far more dependent on getting validation from other people than more outspoken housemates like Freddie. Things could change if Nathan and Steve wind up getting involved in disputes. I find it unlikely that either would be stupid enough to be taken under Govan's wing, but I guess it's early days.

The title of the thread must have thrown Me, I thought you were trying to say that the men in the house were the most important element to the show.

I keep feeling like there is more to come in this series, almost as if it hasn't started yet I hope more twists come soon that bring in more new HMs.

I think that taking the title 'Lack of strong male characters' as 'Men are the most important part of the show rawwwhfuewf!' is a perfect example of the female species continuing, limitless capacity to jump to irrational conclusions.

I kid.

An all male house would suck almost as much as an all female house. Which once upon a time sucked really, really hard.

Pun absoloutely intended.

Fair enough, but you were specific, you said "strong male characters" and mentioned Rex and Victor, so I naturally thought you were saying that that kind of behavior was lacking -from- the show and -needed- in the show to make it worth watching.

And btw, I'm not female.

I didn't mention Victor. I mentioned plenty of other people too. So I have no idea how I was being specific. I don't want to see bullying in the house. Are you suggesting that strong male = bully?

You didn't mention Victor? Sorry, I must have imagined it, I have a bee in My bonnet about him.

Anyway, I'm not saying strong male=bully, no, I'm saying that I really think that a lot of the men in the house have displayed a kind of strength that I personally find really offencive; more james bond type masculinity that say, Cary Grant figure. Both strong types of men, but both very different.

I think Kate Lawlor was a strong female character. She had great craic in the house and tried to stay away from the bitching and fighting (even tho Jade pushed her to the limit!). She really enjoyed BB for what is was.

Strong Male characters, BB1 Craig (tho he slept for most of the series!)
BB2 the men were not strong characters at all.
BB3 Spencer was a strong male character but booted too soon.
BB4 Jon cause he did his own thing regardless of what anyone else thought.
BB5 The men were worse bitches than the girls, and that is saying something.
BB6 maybe Derek? BB7 the men were a bit rubbish too.
BB8 I refused to watch..because of belo and Charley.
BB9 was Rex until his girlfriend came in and he completely changed.
BB10 Marcus and Tom could have had potiental but then Noireen waved her magic wand and something happened. Still loved Marcus tho!
