Default The Census and Religion question

The Irish census was done on Sunday (not sure about the UK one) and one of the questions asked what religion were you. Me and my husband had a bit of a disagreement about this question, I choose no religion, he chose "other" (as he considers himself to be agnostic but I don't think that's actually an organised religion and if it is he doesn't practice as such) But because my kids go to a Catholic school and religion is one of their subjects I put down Roman Catholic for them. So our answers to that question are a bit confusing considering we're all in the same family!

What will you/have you put as an answer to that question?

I put down nWo Wolfpac Souljah but then I'm retarded.

I wouldn't put down any religion for kids. They are too young to decide. The less votes for the Vatican scum the better.

The amount of people ticking Roman Catholic who don't even practice just scares me. THAT'S NOT HOW YOU DO A CENUS!

If you don't believe in it, don't tell them you do.

Well, the reason I put down that the kids were Roman Catholic was because they will/have made their communions/confirmations, simply because of the schools they're in. I know that makes me a hypocrite as I think it's all a load of crap but I just don't want them to feel weird in school because I would have to take them out of religion class or send them to a non denominational school which would just be awkward tbh because there isn't one in my area.

I'm an agnostic and put "no religion" as well, I wouldnt think it comes under "other" seeing as it's not really a religious belief system

yeah, that's what I thought too (or actually I think Stu pointed that out to me before the census ) but Gav was adamant he wanted to fill it in!

I think quite a few people tick Christian because the UK is culturally Christian. They may not go to church every Sunday, but they will expect to marry in a church or Christen their children there. I think someone can belong culturally to a religion without being a follower of the faith. If that makes sense...

Maybe people who tick no religion, agnostic, athiest etc. should be asked if they would like to work over religious holidays like Christmas and Easter. If that were the case I think we'd suddenly find many more cultural Christians.

lol obviously not but tbh I see those as just breaks from work (which are definitely needed imo) and more family holidays then religious ones.

If I was doing the Census I'd still put down Catholic even though I don't go Church or shizzle.

Techincally, I'm baptised as Catholic but, as I don't practise or believe in God, I put down 'no religion'.

I put no religion.

Technically I am a methodist thanks to my parents getting me christened when I was a baby(which I dont actually agree with, why should parents chose their kids religion?)

Its the first census I have actually filled out myself , I felt so grown up

Yeah, I agree eventhough i did have my own kids christened but it was more to do with their school life and family. I do wish it wasn't they way it is though

I think its just whats expected of people too, its obviously harder in ireland as as far as Im aware you are only allowed to go to catholic schools if you have been christened(?) and the majority of schools are catholic over there. Then again this is just what I have picked up from irish mates so it could be totally wrong

People keep asking my sister when shes getting her baby christened(kinda like she has to do it :/ ) and shes starting to feel quite pressurized to do it. I told her to just ignore it

Well, they do ask for your childs baptismal cert when you're putting their name in but I don't think you have to be catholic to go, I mean i went to a Catholic school myself and there was a girl from Iraq in my class, she was muslim. I'm sure if I said no we're not Catholic, they could still go to the school but It would mean me taking them out of religion class and they wouldn't make their communion or confirmation and I would feel like I was making them outsiders because all their class do that

yeah, i just wish it wasn't so entwined in the education system, then it would be so much easier to choose. If you want to practice religion it should be on your own time, Sunday school or whatever. Instead you feel forced into it so your kids are like everyone else
