This post really choked me up, we have a Staffie and he is 4 now, he is the most crazy but lovable dog we've had.

I cannot bear to even think of the day we may lose him.I am near tears typing this now thinking of your loss.

I've never had dogs, but I've lost cats and other small pets.. it's never easy.

Not saying its any easier with different kind of pets, but in my experience losing dogs is always worse than others. Its just because you tend to interact with dogs more and they seem able to show you their emotions. Theres also no better feeling than going home, whether its been an hour, overnight, a week or a month and your dog is always behind the door ready to jump on you and lick your face

I think dogs and cats show the most personality out of all types of pets, in my experience. I have a cat and, time to get soppy, there've been a few times where I've been crying quietly, alone in my room about things and she's slunk into the room, sat down on my lap and made me feel better - her personality is totally different to my brother's cat, etc...

as he loved to throw it for him...so i put it by his bed as a reminder. Its the seemingly inconsequential things that hurt the most.

..they're not inconsequental..they represent everything he meant to all of you....I know it's early days..but maybe in a few weeks think about another rescue...to go with that ball.....shame to have it sat there....and there's a lot of homeless pups out there looking for a ball...

I've never had a dog, so I can't really compare the experience. I interact loads with my cats. Not so much with the little pets though.. and although it's not nice losing the small pets, the advantage is that they don't tend to live long, so you don't have as strong a bond as you do when, for example, your 13 year old cat goes.. [as I had to unfortunately experience a few years ago]. Do you have both dogs and cats Tom?

My cats do that too. I've had my in-the-corner-crying moments and one of the cats always seems to show up and snuggle up purring.. weird little critters they are.. and, yeah, I agree about them having very different personalities.. we've had 4 cats in total [only have 2 now], and I had 2 cats at 2 different times when I lived at my parents house. None of them were the same - personality-wise.

Not at the minute but had them in the past. don't get me wrong it is really sad when both go and I'm not devaluing cats in any way, but I tend to find losing a dog leaves a much bigger hole

Yeah, I know you weren't saying it wasn't hard to lose a pet cat. And, since you've had both, you do have the experience to compare.

Having never had dogs, I really can't agree or disagree. I do love dogs, and the main reason I've never had one is because of the care they need. They need a lot more care than cats, and I have issues with picking up dog-poo.. [I realise that makes me sound really lame].. but at the same time, I wouldn't be the kind of dog-owner who doesn't pick up after their pet.. so not having a dog is my solution. :/
