I think if you were so poor that you actually turned to prostitution out of desperation, you would not be able to afford to pick and choose who you actually slept with (if we're talking about the kind where you pedal your wares on street corners). You'd be off in the back of a car, in some deserted car park or secluded alleyway, with, well anyone. I think it takes a lot to act pretty convincing with somebody who may well be physically repulsive to you. I don't think I could pull it off (no pun intended).

You've raised an exceptionally good point - if things had got that bad - you wouldn't be in that position to pick and chose.

That's the problem with things just being theoretical - the real hard facts as you've laid them out can't be denied. When it is put over like that - no, I couldn't.

Interesting question as I've just come back from Amsterdam which might have influenced my answer, but here goes...

I think prostitution is given a bad rap. Ignoring the drug culture amongst prostitutes in the UK, and instead looking at Amsterdam, it's a very safe, well run operation. The prostitutes aren't ruled by pimps. They aren't doing it for drugs, at least for the majority anyway. They're doing it to pay off rent or debts or, hell, because they enjoy it. It's a business transaction, it's not like you're hiring yourself out to be intimate with someone, you're just selling your private parts as an object and you name your price. You can refuse customers and you can decide what you want to offer as a service. The police are there within 30 seconds if something goes wrong, all the girls have a buzzer they can press to get them there. A guy who slept in my hostel room there came back from just having had sex with one of them and he told us what it was like. He said it was mechanical and weird but it was a worthwhile experience because he said he'd never do it again and he saw the cold distinction between intimacy and sex. These women don't care about you, they care about your money, so I think it's something I would probably do if push came to shove and I needed the money and it was regulated here like it is in Amsterdam. It's insane how backwards the UK can be - if we legalised prostitution and gave prostitutes better conditions to work in, we'd see less people on the streets and less of a drug problem I think.

See I live in a little fantasy world where it would be full of Hugh Grants - utter cads but lovely all the same.

I back you on every word you have said here Zee. I've said the same thing for years and years. It is the oldest profession in the world. If it is allowed to be regulated and run like a proper business.

It does not have to be seedy. Of course that element will always exist - but I've had the Amsterdam view for years and years.

Keeps it all clean, above board, taxed, regulated, inspected.

I would never do it personally, but we are lucky we have a benefits system to fall back on.

Someone in my family tree did have to do it. Her husband died leaving her with three hungry mouths to feed all under the age of 6.

If I was getting paid a considerable amount (£50-150) per person, then yeah I'd be all for it.

Especially if they were conventionally attractive as well.

Sorry, I should have made myself clearer, this was back in the past, during the Victorian age when she had no chance to draw any benefits.

It's still extremely sad though, and later in life she couldn't live with it . The children were well brought up though and did quite well for themselves and looked after her too.
