He mentioned it in one of his audition interviews, not his official intro VT. Something he had no idea would be aired. As for "dresses like a gang member", he dresses like pretty much every rap music fan in the US, if anything, more understated than most. He does not wear all blue or only blue, and he doesn't flash real gang signs on the show - he uses a fake one the smokers made up to refer to themselves before Deana became an outsider. Lauren frequently uses it as well.
There's no "better analogy" needed here. Emma said something that simply should not be said openly like that on TV. While she might be excused for being too stupid to know better, the production team should've had the sense to look into it before putting it on her teleprompter. It's obviously a cultural ignorance - no tv show anywhere in the US would've been so flippant about it - but that doesn't excuse it.
