I know all you young ones are going to sigh at my next line, BUT when I was young Stars really were stars. Not just the Hollywood lot either. We had plenty of our own stars, but they were more private then. This was in the days when the media respected peoples privacy, so the stars of that age had a mystery about them which is sadly lacking nowadays. To me a celebrity is someone who is a household name (for all the right reasons) for achievement in whatever field they are known in. Definately NOT for fleecing taxpayers or sleeping with other peoples partners and then telling all.

What era are you talking about because since the 30's the tabloids have been about and in the 50's celebs houses and phonelines were bugged by the paps.

People were also spoon fed fake stories from whoever these stars were contracted to who would set up photo shoots to make them look like they were naturally papped and the studios would also send their stars out on dates and tip off the press to gain publicity for them.

Honestly I cant think of any era since 50's + where the gossip rags did not exist.

One can even see the odd.....WTF, she is not a celeb, shes a prozzie and he shouldn't be considered on the strength of ??????? etc etc.

We now have a roaring discussion on whether or not someones double should be considered and whether or not a skanky slapper who is nothing better than a pariah should be given air time.

It used to be people that we in the limelight, the tv or radio or on the big creen, could be considered as celebs, but nowadays with the media exposure we see on both the tv and internet, there are loads of so called celebs creeping in that some of us have never heard of so my question is....

What constitutes a celebrity.
a true definition of celeb in my eyes is someone that has gained a following from something they are involved with and lots are aware of this involvement a example of this would be a pop star - they sing songs and lots are aware of them and have a fan base.

now a days to do something that gets you in the media is as little as sending a twit - and you have millions if not billions of twits following this twit and supporting this twit as if they are a god or religion.

i think ch5 should thin very carefully of who they put in there - yes eye candy is nice but if the person has no brain power and all the effort is just to look pretty it will be a very boring series.

i like the strong minded celebrity that have a game plan - the game plan can be as simple as go in and be as silly as possible - i will even pay them myself as they are treating BB for what it is - a game. the object in to win - by any means.

A celebrity is someone that has a successful career for a decent number of years...

And one that 75% of people between 17 and 50 would be able to name from a picture.

Or as Wiki says.

"Celebrity refers to popular fame and public attention in the media, usually applied to a person, or group of people (celebrity couple, family etc.), or occasionally, to animals or fictional entities. Celebrity status is often associated with wealth (commonly referred to as fame and fortune) and fame can often provide opportunities to make money.
Successful careers in sports and entertainment are commonly associated with celebrity status.[1][2] People may also become celebrities due to media attention for their lifestyle, wealth, or actions, or for their connection to a famous person."

The word means little these days. It certainly doesn't have the same status it used to have.

Nowadays any half wit can become a so-called celebrity - in fact the more they resemble a half wit the more likely other halfwits will vote for them to be given this rather dubious accolade.

Im not fussed how big/famous a celeb a housemate is just as long as they are entertaining.

Jackie Stallone was someones mum and read arses for a living and was one of the best housemates ever.

Please no more sportsmen. Audley Harrison, Gareth Thomas, Ashley Mckenzie, Razor, Evander Holyfield, Dennis Rodman, Vinnie Jones.... All siht housemates.

Brilliant post Sassy, and the emboldened part is true but also amusing.

I didn't claim that the gossip rags didn't exist, rather that either they were more restrained then, or the public wasn't as 'into' the media as they seem to be today.
For example, I was born in 1950 and we didn't have a tv until I was about 11. So the only 'access' I had to the actors was on the big screen.
On the plus side. I grew up with a love for the wriotten word and I've been in love with books ever since.

Someone with Talent and a good personality really

They're some people who should not be classed as a celeb like be linking them to CBB or other shows like that. Because teenagers love to be famous these days and some getting famous for the wrong reasons is basically giving out the wrong message.

For example
White Dee - I don't judge anyone for being on benefits because life is tough, but she shouldn't been in the limelight in the first place. She isn't a celebrity in my eyes. She just got lucky

Josie - The reason she is known is another bad example.
