they have grabbed land and declared a state of their own, that can be attacked and it will have benefits. Organisations like IS gain traction for a number of reasons, and similarly it will be a number of combined actions that will cause it to lose that traction until it fizzles out.

Every complex problem can be broken down in to a number of simpler issues, and when all the issues are addressed, the problem is solved. Bombing is just one technique amongst many, but it is still necessary to halt the IS expansion, and remove the resources it has captured and is profiting from.
