Though, I don't get upset when someone says someone is crippling a situation, or the economy is crippled or this feeling is crippling. It's just a metaphor, a creative use of language, an emotive way to communicate new meanings. My mum in law died in my arms high on morphine and drowned in her own bodily fluids and it breaks my heart every single day so i find it highly offensive, call me sensitive, call me what you want, i think cancer is an evil disease that robs people of their loved ones and is a term that should not be used lightly.

I get people can be offended by it, but I feel the op's reaction is well, a bit overly dramatic.

Actually I find this thread more offensive.
I agree 100%. I lost my mother last year to cancer too, and again I didn't find it at all offensive. I find the sight and sound of him totally offensive however, and would love for him to fail at the final hurdle.

Im really really surprised you said that Amy Jade. I thought that they could have used ANOTHER term other than cancer. I dont like it used like this and thats why I created a post I dont even LIKE bear. Anyway a few people agree with me you are entitled to your own opinion but I am a bit hurt if I am honest. Peace though

I'm genuinely so sorry for your loss, I know how hard it is to see somebody deteriorate before your eyes, it's the hardest thing I've ever been through and I do understand you being offended and that's absoloutely fine

I mean I'm sorry you're hurt but I am entitled to my opinion as much as anyone else, I didn't find her remark offensive at all, I wouldn't if anyone said it - maybe because I've heard it before and heard it said by somebody who has had cancer

Well known metaphor.
It wasn't directed at any of us personally so i dont see the need for all the fuss.
Had she said that she wished he was struck down with cancer then maybe that would have been different.

Why is this ridiculously overused cliché still a thing? People have very valid reasons for being annoyed by flinging the term "cancer" around so casually.

I'm not expecting everyone take issue with it but a little basic understanding as to why some people are wouldn't go amiss.

And I'm no Bear fan whatsoever (but on the subject of your last point, I doubt this would have been defended half as much had he said it so I'd say people on both sides would be guilty of having a different response depending on who said it).

It would be added to his list of 'funny moments' for sure. We none fans must learn that we can not say anything bad about the virtuous bear, for fear of upsetting him or fans. Im speaking as the mother of a son who had Leukemia as child(he survived). I didnt find it offensive, I took it the way it was meant in that Bear is a character who enjoys spreading negative vibes around, and can be very cruel. My son hates him even more than I do and thought cancer was a good word to describe how vile he is. If Bear had said it his fans would be agreeing with him, no doubt about it, the double standards have been bad this year.

The english language is more complex than that.

Quote:
can·cer
ˈkansər/

a practice or phenomenon perceived to be evil or destructive and hard to contain or eradicate.
"racism is a cancer sweeping across Europe"
So Bear being a cancer of the house would be quite a valid sentence.

Nothing wrong with saying it really and to suggest that everyone who does has no experience of the actualities of cancer is a little bit daft.
