Yep, there's some bad **** going around the town I work in at the moment. 3 local "well known" junkies found dead in 6 months from "bad" heroin - one of them just last week. A guy I've been kicking out of the shop on a thrice-weekly for 5+ years

. I'll never have to shout "**** off you ****ing know that you're barred!" at him again. It genuinely feels weird.
... But yes, anyway, just pointing out that you're right: dealers cut their product with all sorts of nasty crap. It's usually not the drugs that kill in these cases, but whatever drain cleaner or rather poison happens to have been cut into the mix.
Another very common one is people cutting speed in with cocaine, which can end pretty badly.
