May is a socially awkward person, so she is at a distinct disadvantage to begin with. She really isn't leader material. She isn't a motivator, she clearly isn't an organiser as she couldn't mobilise the party faithful at the election. She is insular, trusting only a few of her closest advisors, so when they mess up, like they did at the last election, she was completely vulnerable.

Everyone has there own way, and there is no right or wrong if it gets the results. But May didn't get the results expected of her. She was 100% responsible for that failure and she cannot recover from that. She won't fight the next election as leader of the party whenever that happens to be, but there is equally no reason to rush the appointment of a new leader. A year to 18 months before the next election is plenty time for a new leader to find their feet.
