Terror level increased.

The pastor makes a statement later on tonight, he's not gonna do it I bet.

If we are doing to allow muslims to stage protests with placards reading "Death to the UK/USA" and burning our flags (which I don't consider to be a crime either), we have to be prepared to afford other groups the same rights. It's called living in a democracy.
It's a crime to show disrespect to the US flag in the US.

There is no way this is gonna go ahead!

Its inciting violence, and with the first amendment and all, you still cant instigate a riot. ANd thats what this would do to a certain extent!

No way, will they let it go on, since he made it so public. If he just decided to do it, without all the hoopla around it, it would be fine!

Far from it. Everybody loses out when you start to censor people. The book burners will be made out to be martyr figures by their sympathisers. It also begs the question, where do you draw the line when it comes to offending people's religious sensitivities? Banning something considered by certain religious circles to be 'blasphemous' for instance?

This wouldn't help anybody. You are talking about curtailing people's civil liberties in the name of national security. That is about as illiberal as you can get.

Ah yes, the Patriot Act passed into law by that blameless paragon of liberty and fairness, the Bush Administration. I hope, for the Americans' sake, the Senate are doing their level best to get that repealed.

This is nothing to do with race. Religion is a conscious choice.

That said, this is ridiculous. I have a Mormon bible in my room. Might burn it.

Undoubtedly, the line between free speech and abuse of it is a thin one yet it is right that it should exist.

The intention of allowing free speech is not for it to become a tool used to condone racism, by banning this book burning you are not taking away a civil liberty; you are preventing the abuse of it.

Well you can't be prejudiced against a conscientious choice - that's just being judgmental. There's room for debate, it's a philosophical clash (though I don't doubt there ARE some attending this who probably think all Arabs or Persians (if they can differentiate between the two) are Muslim)

Well prejudice is defined as:
"an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason"

or

"unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, esp. of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group"

So I think it's appropiate to describe this as prejudice.

There is no such thing as abusing your right to freedom of expression. It might be for a noble cause or it could be for something malicious and racist like the one we're discussing now.

I see no reason why burning a copy of the Quran, purchaed with your own money, can be considered any more unlawful than some whacko preacher standing in the middle of high street talking about how everybody who doesn't follow Jesus will burn in Hell. If you don't like what they're saying, ignore them. It's not like what they say is going to affect you.

It's officially been called off, but expect people to do it anyway now they've got the idea in their heads. The damage is done.

Well done whoever started it, you've got even more people to sign up for Al Whateveritis now probably :\

You can abuse it, particuarly considering that was never its intention. Freedom of speech was not granted so that people could freely and provocatively air their prejudices and allow racism a platform.

If you want to sit at home and burn a Quran, then do so, but do not widely publicise the activity and do not publicly encourage it because then you are only stirring up hatred and violence, and that is where you have to draw a line.

I'm glad it's been called off, it's the most stupid idea I've ever heard, punishing Muslim's for the actions of one specific group is highly immature and unjust. He'd just be causing more trouble by doing it anyway, expect many more attacks on America, probably worse than before because of this even if it hasn't happened, the fight has been initiated!

It's kinda silly though, at these protests they burn American Flags as if all Americans are for the burning of the Quran, yet the very thing Muslims are trying to do is show they're all weren't responsible for 9/11

By the way it should more correctly be referred to as al-qur’ān, it can be spelled as Qur’ān, Coran, Quran, Kuran, Koran, or al-Qur’ān. If you want to be correct. Depending on the country, it mean 'the recitation'
