I agree Arista and although we all know it goes on all over,we at least know(or hope) that if that had happened in this country that the scum would have been given a hefty sentence,I do think we are too soft here, but I'de like to think unlike the Indian police our 'men' would have been outraged.

So the difference between barbarism and an enlightened society, is not the amount and level of violent crime against women, but whether or not the police are corrupt?

Have you been paying attention to this phone hacking scandal? Our police are corrupt too, just in different ways.

I wish I could find a path through to your common sense.

Do we? Even in this country very few rape cases end in a conviction

Agreed. And the posters Arista has shown, with the English dialogue, as most foreign nations tend to do when they no longer respect their current government (or getting a message through to the English speaking democracies of the world...) Really, it's almost impossible to read a news article and not be physically ill. Been feeling way too ill these days.

Let's put this in perspective, it takes a certain type of person to commit rape.. let alone a serious sexual assault that I find it difficult to contemplate any human would inflict on another.
There were 6 men willing to subject a young stranger innocently travelling on the same bus to that...
So no, I don't think that we can just say abuse against women is worldwide.
Shark attack made an excellent point, the protesters may have been appealing to the western world with the use of placards in English.
Let's hope the deaths of these women serve as a catalyst for social and legal reform in India.

I have been through a rape court case with a family member....she was warned all the way through that it was highly likely to NOT end in conviction even though when I arrived at her house the night in question she was bruised and bloodied and there was lots of physical evidence it wouldn't matter. The CPS don't allow many cases to get to court and the ones that do have high non conviction rates. The person was found not guilty due to irregularities in the attending police officers notes....it was a disgrace. I saw a once vibrant girl reduced to a mere shadow of her former self, pushed to drinking and depression because of the justice system in THIS country. I feel terribly for the girl in this story but KNOW there are some sick sexual predators in this country too.

I'm sorry to hear that Anniek, this country is a disgrace though and especially after the evidence you've just showed us that your friend was raped.

This is not just a 'rape' case it is now murder, the girl probably would have survived had they not inserted the iron bar and ripped her insides, and beat her,I think this is what makes this case so horrible,it IS barbaric and should not be tolerated anywhere and I am sure it would not have been here.

If we are comparing barbaric deeds, Does anyone recall the case about the girl who was short 10p for her fare home on the night bus who having been turned away by the driver was then raped as she walked home?

I think the main difference between the way rape is dealt with in this country and the way it is dealt with in India is the place of women in society here against the place of women in society there. Especially women from the poorest sections of society, or lower castes.

I think the diff between the two countries is highlighted by the attitudes of the populations of these countries. In Britain this crime is universally condemned by everybody from the man on the street to the queen herself. All depts within the British establishment would be actively seeking to find the perpetrators of this disgusting act and they would all be given very long life terms.

However in India we read the crime has not been properly investigated and that the local police force are dragging their feet , almost unconcerned. We also read that there is in place a strange caste system that condones certain actions of higher caste people carried out on lower caste people. We find in general attitudes to women by large numbers of Indian males is highly misogynistic.

These are the diffs between the two nations and clearly India needs to step forward a few hundred years and wake up to the fact that these views are not acceptable in a modern society.

Interesting idea, however for any society to evolve it takes time. It wasnt so long ago that laws were introduced in this country to ensure women's rights, equal rights given to people with disabilities, people from different ethnic origins, etc.

It will take time, however the publicity and the outrage created by these incidents will put pressure to change laws and thinking.

phrases like Barbaric Nation is what was used to justify going to other countricountries and doing bad things to the proplr there (including rape). If you use words like that, things will never change

Exclamation Six men arrested in ANOTHER Indian 'bus rape'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-21003279

Quote:
Police in India have arrested six men after they allegedly gang-raped a woman on a bus, just weeks after a similar attack shocked the nation.

The latest assault is said to have taken place in the northern state of Punjab. The police are searching for a seventh suspected attacker.

Last month, a 23-year-old student died of her injuries after the being raped in the capital Delhi.

Five men have been charged with her murder and are facing trial.

If convicted, they face the death penalty.

A sixth suspect, who is thought to be 17, will be tried separately in a youth court if it is confirmed he is a minor.

The Delhi attack prompted mass protests which prompted the government to set up special fast-track courts to exclusively deal with rape cases and also consider strengthening sexual assault laws, the BBC's Sanjoy Majumder reports.

Night attack

Police officials say that the latest victim was a 29-year-old woman.

She is believed to have been travelling on a bus back to her village on Friday night.
The driver and conductor allegedly refused to stop at her village, instead taking her to a desolate location not far from the city of Amritsar.

The two men are then believed to have been joined by five others and taken turns raping the woman throughout the night.
The victim was then dropped off near her village, where she was able to tell her relatives about the attack.

The extent of the woman's injuries were not immediately known.

..I read this story this morning...horrific..

..well, they are talking about the death sentence for the other ones and it could be the same with these...that's their decision...I don't wish to know or take any pleasure out of how they do it though..whatever they have done, I find the torture or killing of another human being barbaric...
