I think that people generalise the "brummie" accent aswell.
The really horrible one's are Wolverhampton, Dudley, Black Country... those sorts of place's. Most people who live in the centre of Birmingham really don't have that strong an accent. Even I hate it when I hear someone from Birmingham on telly but were honestly all not that bad. Now the scottish, I really hate all variations of that accent. I've got a scottish uncle and i'm just like. :| |

Your right about the Black Country accent. Its way more worse than the “Brummie“ one.
My pet hate is the Northern Ireland one. It seems to be a big trend in call centres. So when they speak i just hang up. |

Fife/Weegie/Aberdonian accents suk Niamh - trust me! I feel I'm lucky as lived a few places and also have to sound sensible/professional in a work context so have lost my Fife one.
I think Scottish accents might be a Marmite to people from the other countries in the Isles. I think I mentioned before, I used to visit Nottingham quite regularly to see a 'pal'. A few of the locals would treat me as scum when they heard me speak even a 'neutral' Scottish accent. On the other hand, a couple who were her best friends were totally addicted to Rab C Nesbitt. "How on earth do you understand that programme?" says I, "I even have trouble understanding the Weegie-talk sometimes". Their answer from that era was simple - Telextext is on page 888 |

Ian! The Fife accent isn't bad! How very dare you!
I agree there are areas where it is bound to sound like a foreign language to some (even me sometimes) but some of us can talk properly you knnow!

I like all of the Scottish accents though, ones like Karly had (was that fife?) are pretty hard to understand sometimes, I don't care though I just like the sound of it! Where's Paisley btw? that's where Gerard Butler is from, I presume he's had to water down his accent alot though to get by in the states!

Josy's not from Weegieland is she? SHe's from Airdrie..
Oh yay! and now that I know Zee isn't from Weegieland, I can safely say that it is a god awful accent! (again though I'm referring to a very strong one, I know there are Weegies who have perfectly acceptable accents)

Let's be honest: regardless of where you come from: there are areas that people speak properly - and will have a more refined accent - and other areas within the same cities, those who have been brought up to use the local venacular, local slang, mispronunciations - which add to the 'chav / weegie / ned' sound. Doesn't matter if it's Scotland, Ireland, Wales or England - it's applies all the same.
