...I don’t think that in general, people are selfish or brainless or idiots...(...obviously those things will always apply to a few individuals...)..I agree with James, in that the guidance on the whole has been followed through this...and that guidance has at times been quite shaky as well and left so much ‘risk assessment’ open for interpretation...life has not been the same for all of us over these last months, so it’s easy to say...oh, how could you risk/how could you be so stupid..!!! Etc...but for some, they’ve needed that day at the beach and they’ve felt the need of it so much that they have taken risks....so, so many things and factors of people home schooling, having their children between home walls for 24hrs a day without a break, losing jobs and having no income, having to face food shortages and not having an income to afford a luxury of being able to stock up...daily, I’ve spoken to families who a few months ago, were ‘ticking along’, but who now have intervention teams of social workers in their lives ... mental health in parents and in children is at such a low....people have struggled so much for months...the scenes at the beaches yesterday is not a comfortable sight but it felt very much an understandable sight, though...those people, many of who may desperately want to have their children back at school but are unable to yet...took a risk yesterday because their mental well-being would have felt that need to...

it's what i have been saying all along since the very beginning of the outbreak, you cannot force people to do something they don't want to in a democracy. They have to make their own decisions. We as individuals are still capable of social distancing if we want to, so let others live their lives and face the consequences of their actions as has always been the case

Yes they do but it may have an impact on the rest of us if we go into lockdown again but hey ho yeah you can't legislate for these people, the UK has one of the softer lockdowns in Europe with regard to going outside and getting exercise, we are not seeing this level of stupidity in other countries, maybe it is happening and it is not being reported, the UK is certainly making the headlines in the media abroad though More than the going to the beach what is most disappointing to me is the amount of trash they are leaving behind

I'd be surprised if any of the larger European economies do. They've seen the damage now, its catastrophic, they'll fiddle whatever figures they have to to stop it happening again. Specific closures, mandatory mask wearing, or very localised lockdown maybe. Full lockdown will never happen again.

...and not just for economic reasons, I think it would be catastrophic for mental well-being ...(...of adults and children...)...should there be another full lockdown for any sustained length of time...

I think we just don't hear about it in other countries tbh, I've seen videos of Paris where its looked packed for weeks now with people in bars and restaurants, all mingling together etc. I remember seeing their beaches very crowded at one point as well

My local beach has apparently being trashed. Litter everywhere. All night parties going on. Lots of broken galss as you can imagine on sand and people wirh bare feet is a serious health and safety issue. A lady has already filled 30 bags full of rubbish and now the council are clearing it up too. Its a disgrace

Mental health is thrown around too casually as a catch all for poor behaviour, no one was locked in doors at all during this time apart from the shielding and they were not at the beach, and the way things are going they will be trapped in doors for a long time, they are the ones who should receive empathy in all this, not the ravers, and the party goers, and beach goers, we can go on for a bit longer without all having to drive for hours to the coast, everyone has access to green space locally
