True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto is having a big day. His show racked up 12 Emmy nominations today, including a nomination for Pizzolatto himself for outstanding writing for a drama series, plus noms for Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and a nod for outstanding drama. Plus, he has revealed his revised plan for the next season of the show: At first Pizzolatto said season two would have three leads, but now he tells the Daily Beast that's not quite true anymore. "That ballooned a little bit. I would say there are four central roles," he says now. And we'll have to "wait and see" if any of the leads are women, so that is an exciting development. It's still set in California, though, so we can definitely bank on someone wearily removing his or her sunglasses at some point and staring dejectedly at the cruel battle between the hubris of man and the violent permanent chaos of nature.

I don't quite know why but i reckon Bridget Fonda would make a good female lead in this kinda' show.
Gillian Anderson would be great too but if she's teamed up with a guy it might be a bit too M&S. Maybe have her play the part with an English accent (which suits her better anyway imo).

Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch have both been linked to the second season of True Detective.

The Normal Heart star is reportedly in talks to play the younger male lead, with Farrell playing the older starring role.

According to The Wrap, HBO wanted to land "a true movie star" who could play "rugged and gritty" for the older male character.

38-year-old Farrell is reportedly close to signing up for the role, which is said to be the primary focus of the crime drama's second series.

The Total Recall actor is not the only movie star to have been approached by the network.

Both Jessica Chastain and Christian Bale are thought to have turned down involvement in the project due to prior scheduling commitments.

Garrett Hedlund had also been rumoured to be in the running for the show's younger lead, but Kitsch is believed to have an edge on landing the coveted part.

Yesterday, in the midst of hotly defending the idea of Vince Vaughn in True Detective, we wondered when we would hear news about actresses being considered for a lead role. Well, today is that day. The Wrap is not only reporting that Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, Top of the Lake) is being considered for the female lead, but that they also have an informative breakdown of the main characters who will try to make us forget all about Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. The information here lines up with creator Nic Pizzolatto’s earlier claim that his cast “ballooned a little bit. I would say there are four central roles.” Here are the character descriptions and the actors currently in the running for the roles.

Ani Bezzerides (Elisabeth Moss): Monterey sheriff with a troubled past that has led her to a gambling and alcohol addiction. Many people are drawing comparisons to Moss’s role in the under-the-radar Sundance series Top of the Lake. If you’ve only seen Moss play Peggy Olsen, you can watch Top of the Lake for yourself on Netflix to get a better sense of her range.

Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell): Another damaged detective character. This could give Farrell a chance to go way, way out there.

Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch): Possibly our third detective, a young, handsome veteran who is, no doubt, also quite damaged. If this is Kitsch doing his Heathcliff of Texas Friday Night Lights thing filtered through Lone Survivor, we’re in for a treat.

Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn): The central antagonist. Not a murderer, per se, but a shady businessman and former thug who is trying to use his influence with local politicians to put a railway in place between Northern and Southern California and reap the financial benefits. The California setting and the idea of a businessman using public works for corrupt financial gain calls to mind John Huston’s great villainous character in Chinatown. The idea of Vaughn using his patented charm offensive for nefarious purposes is downright delicious.

Though it’s hard to imagine Season 2 of True Detective topping Season 1 (which had the advantage of premiering without such heavy expectations) this rundown is very alluring. It also seems clear that Pizzolatto took some of the gender-specific criticism levied at the first season to heart. Not just because he’s eyeballing Moss for a lead role, but because the victim this time around won’t be a luridly naked female. It might be a luridly naked male: Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager who was embroiled in Semyon’s transportation deal, is found dead with Satanic symbols etched on his chest. Yes, get ready for the next season to kick off with an image as disturbing as the one that launched the series, and for the next “Who Is the Yellow King?” mystery to dominate your life sometime next year.

Rosario Dawson and Jessica Biel are reportedly in the running for the female lead of True Detective season two.

It was previously rumoured that Rachel McAdams and Elisabeth Moss were competing for the role of a tough California sheriff, whose dark past has driven her to gambling and alcohol addictions.

However, seven further actresses have been invited back to read for the role, according to The Wrap.

Although McAdams and Moss are reportedly still in contention, Sin City star Dawson is thought to be the new frontrunner.

Biel (The Illusionist), Malin Akerman (Watchmen) and Jaimie Alexander (Thor) have been touted as strong candidates.

Meanwhile, Brit Marling (Another Earth), Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones) and Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes) are considered outsiders for the part.

Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn are said to be locked down for the other three major roles.

The second season, again written by Nic Pizzolatto, will reportedly pick up with the brutal murder of a corrupt California city manager, whose body is found on the eve of a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal.

Three law enforcement officials from different cities are tasked with solving the case.

Unlike the first season, which was directed entirely by Cary Fukunaga, the second season is likely to use several directors, with rumoured names including Justin Lin and William Friedkin.

The second season of True Detective is due to begin production this month.

COLIN FARRELL CONFIRMED FOR ‘TRUE DETECTIVE’



Colin Farrell has taken it upon himself to confirm that he will be playing one of the detectives in Season Two of True Detective.

“I’m doing the second series. I’m so excited … I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot. I know very little about it, but we’re shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids.” Farrell told The Sunday World.

Apart from Colin, there are three other rumoured leads that we are waiting to hear confirm their involvement. Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn are also in the rumour mill but there has been no confirmation as of yet.

To add to all of the mystery, it still remains to be seen who will play the female lead of the series and the third detective. The Wrap reported last week that there were 7 actresses in the running for the role, including Jessica Biel, Oona Chaplin, Rosario Dawson and Kelly Reilly. The role has been described as “A Monterey sheriff with a troubled past that has led her to a gambling and alcohol addiction.”

Dawson has the advantage of having acted alongside Farrell in Alexander, and this may work in her favour and give her an advantage on-screen.

I loved In Bruges He was also really good in Seven Psychopaths, he seems to do better when he can be Irish and not have to do an American accent
