Probably to cover up his huge gaffe! I dont think he intended to offend but I didnt see the comment...I just dont think its right to think its ok to go round calling people silly names based on the colour of their skin (without challenge) which people seem to think it is. And always comparing it to if someone is picked out cos of their white skin as if its the same when it isnt...I was really commenting on what the TIBB mob have said not the incident itself...breathe lol

Tbh that article is proof(as if we needed any more) or the ridiculously PC world we live in now.
That comment was made about BOTH races, he made the same kind of joke about the white person AT THE SAME TIME. Not as an afterthought to try and sort his 'mistake' out, was in the same sentence for crying out loud. ''Here we have our very own chocolate HobNob and custard cream - Diane Abbott and Michael Portillo.'' Not like he said we have our very own chocolate biscuit...stops to think...Oh, AND custard cream. Pathetic really that 15 people took time to complain over something so trivial. |

I'm sure Diane Abbott wasn't offended any more than Michael Portillo was. It was a light-hearted comment, not meant to be offensive. If it had been meant in an offensive way then it would have been different.
I find that it's mostly left-wing, middle-class, touchy-feely white people who get a bit hysterical and stir up a racial hornets' nests like this. While we're talking about discrimination, I'd just like to mention the white lower-working class, or "unter-class" as they have been referred to in the press. They have no special funding, They have no 'inclusion centres' or a board set up to ensure they are not disciminated against and they do not benefit from positive discrimination. No one cares whether or not they are "under-represented" in a particular area of industry and the chattering classes do not get outraged on their behalf. And they are the people that the BNP are currently targetting for membership.

Nothing in excess

Lets not jump to conclusions. The people who complained might very well have been black and who are we to decide what is and isn't offensive unless we genuinely know how it feels?
It's all too telling how affronted many white people feel at the suggestion that anything could be deemed racist or that racism even exists. |

Um, I think I'm missing the point here.
Calling a black person a chocolate hobnob is exactly the same as calling them black. So i.e racist...am I not right? |

![]() Can you see it? At the beginning of your post? Why is calling them black racist? They are black, or a shade or two lighter. I'm a white man. I work with a black man. In perfect harmony

I dont mind being called a "black man" in an non racist way for thats what i am, but i dont see why my race should define me. And to the white people sayin there not offended by being called Whitey Etc, its because the history is different, over the years your acestors didnt expirience what ours did, so we have different mentalitys towards it, in my opinion.
