I'm sure Diane Abbott wasn't offended any more than Michael Portillo was. It was a light-hearted comment, not meant to be offensive. If it had been meant in an offensive way then it would have been different.
I find that it's mostly left-wing, middle-class, touchy-feely white people who get a bit hysterical and stir up a racial hornets' nests like this.
While we're talking about discrimination, I'd just like to mention the white lower-working class, or "unter-class" as they have been referred to in the press. They have no special funding, They have no 'inclusion centres' or a board set up to ensure they are not disciminated against and they do not benefit from positive discrimination. No one cares whether or not they are "under-represented" in a particular area of industry and the chattering classes do not get outraged on their behalf. And they are the people that the BNP are currently targetting for membership.
