I don't know, maybe it's cos our primary schools don't have canteens, it just seems strange that people expect schools to be responsible for kids diets, that should be the parents job imo.

..it would be interesting to see whether those meals actually do represent what that particular school offers as I have never known a school not provide various salad items or vegetables...whether the child chooses to take it is a different matter entirely....but I do know that the meals are generally well balanced..as well as possible for £2..and they also bear in mind what children will actually eat as well..and what the parents want too..... ..there is not much you can buy for £2 in the way of a lunch so I personally feel that what they get is reasonable and there is an alternative...packed lunch..that way you know exactly what your child is eating and how much it cost |

A lot of parents probably dont even know about the junk their kids are eating...its not often you ge a full answer from a kid when you ask what they had for lunch, and a lot would hear 'cucumber' and think thats fine...not knowing it was 2./3 slices . And some cant even afford to change it, not everyone can afford to make packed lunches daily...so their kids HAVE to eat what the school provide. Which IMO should be healthy...especially with everyone so up in arms about obese children etc.

I think a lot of the problems are coming from school kitchens shutting down. My school had its own kitchen and everything we bought was freshly made.
My brothers school still has a ktichen and they have a variety of choices. Their school even sends a menu home a month in advance informing the parents of the choices that will be available for that month...which is a fantastic idea I think. And the stuff on it always sounds gorgeous too

I;m not saying it is. But some people (through no fault of their own, not talking about scroungers and that) cant afford to pay the extra tenner or so a week...and get free school meals.
