Agreed. I'd actually go a bit further and say that it's not even homophobic language. Before I get lynched, I'll explain what I mean! I don't think
language can be homophobic, homophobia is a way of thinking, and the language used to express homophobia is entirely dependant on
intent. Not simply the language itself out of context.
Simply using the word fa**ot, as much as some people might hate the word because of the connotations it has to them, does not make the person using it a homophobe. By saying it does, you're applying an entire mindset to a person, based on a single word they've said (or in this case typed) without understanding anything about that persons individual relationship with the word, or the people they were saying it to, or the context it was said in. ALL of these things have to be understood if you're going to label someone as a homophobe as actually
being homophobic is a very serious thing, and a very
different thing to being insensitive with the language you choose to use.
By all means take issue with his choice of language and let's debate whether it's an acceptable term (in my life, it is) but people shouldn't confuse their personal distaste for a word and how it makes
them feel with someone else's intent in using it. At worst, it makes him insensitive, but homophobic? No.
