The former X Factor winner caught Tomlinson's mum's attention after he started criticising the boyband star's first audition, describing him as the "luckiest man in music" for landing a record deal.

When the Doncaster singer's mum saw the tweets, she replied: "Hi I'm Louis's mum. My family have always liked you and bought your records. Why be so cruel?

"Why shame him in public? He was sad about his audition. He was incredibly nervous. Listen to his YouTube.

"He is 18 Steve! I honestly thought you were a nice bloke. Sadly for us now what we were told about you seems accurate."

Brookstein replied to her remarks by telling her to buy her son some singing lessons. "If you are Louis's mum. Get the poor lad some singing lessons for Christmas. A couple of dozen at least," he said.

"I've heard his YouTube. Auto-Tune all over it. I don't blame him. I blame Simon [Cowell] for putting him in the public eye.

"If he was a builder he wouldn't be able to work on a house. He would need to learn his trade. Why do you think this is ok? Listen, he is a rouge trader. A Mickey Mouse cowboy builder. Don't blame me for exposing his poor workmanship. End of."

He later tweeted Tomlinson directly, advising him: "You have a great opportunity. Take singing lessons and become a proper singer. Work on your breathing and support."

However, he also questioned how the teenager got his position in One Direction, commenting: "There should be an enquiry over show fixing. He is shockingly terrible. It's like Les Dawson comedy bad."

Tomlinson appeared unfazed by the row, tweeting Brookstein back the short response: "Steve you're my idol!"

Louis isn't great [from what I heard in that thread earlier] but this isn't how you talk to people that have said they're your fan, especially when you have so little of them...

i dont like one direction but steve was very cruel to one of the members here,especially since the asian guy is the worst one out of the group.

Brookstein was an average karaoke soul/pop singer, bet those who voted for him regret doing it. He's a nasty bitter man. I remember him slagging off JLS and Jedward last year both who have done better than the flop has.

Sharon saw through him, she would have owned both Dannii and Cheryl if they started too.
