Default Do smokers have rights?

Or are they just nasty people who are out to kill everyone with their second hand smoke?

The goverment seems to treat them almost like Nazi's these days, when infact what they're doing, banning it everyone, stopping people's freedoms, is almost nazism in itself.

Someone should take a stand

I vote Niamh and Vicky.

In fact, nearly every nonsmoker I know says they preferred it when people could smoke in bars/clubs because now that people dont, all you can smell is toilets/sweat and they would rather smell the smoke

I can sort of see where the government are coming from banning it in public places and although I don't agree with it, I can see the argument for banning it in town centres because children and non-smokers are obviously gonna be there. However, I think that there should be designated smoking areas/rooms in offices/public places at the bare minimum and I can't see any argument whatsoever for banning it in pubs. The reason people went to the pub was to socialise over a drink and part of the social aspect of it was smoking. The most they should do with pubs is make the landlord acquire a license, like they have to do to sell alcohol and make sure all employees working there are comfortable working in a smoking environment.

For the record, I'm a non smoker and the only time I can think the smoking ban has affected me positively is when I've been eating in restaurants. I hated going to proper restaurants and the whole place smelling of cigarettes.

It's stupid to ban it in public, the health risks to the general public must be incredibly small and making a criminal out of someone for doing something that is perfectly legal is a bit ridiculous. I'm not as opposed to pubs/clubs etc. banning it but I don't think it should be law that people can't smoke in any of them, leave it to the choice of whoever's running the place

I would expect all the car fumes in city centres do more damage to kids than smoking could.

Apprently they're allowed to smoke in the house of commons bar, but not sure if that is a myth or not. If it's true, one rule for them another for us

Yes I've heard that before. Also I believe smoking is allowed in prison and mental health hospitals. However I don't know that for sure as I've never been........

In 2009-10, the government made over £10 billion from tobacco tax. During the same period, the NHS cost £100 billion to run. So smokers are in effect funding 10% of the NHS. That £10 billion is going to have to be collected from somewhere once smokers have been hounded to extinction. Conversely, obese people pay no extra tax on their food but their health problems cost as much as smoking-related illnesses.

If smoking bans continue in the way they have been imposed in the last few years, smokers will buy their tobacco illegally and criminals will make money from supplying in the way they do now with drugs. If people use their money, that has already been taxed by PAYE or another method, to buy tobacco which has a huge tax markup, then that's up to them. So long as they're not interferring with others or making others uncomfortable. Having said that, I don't know anyone who smokes who wouldn't be happy to nip outside and wouldn't dream of smoking around non-smokers or in anyone's home.

Incidentally, I have never seen anyone smoke in Houses of Parliament. In fact, Parliament was the first establishment in England to impose a smoking ban way back in the 1600s.

I've been having this financial NHS cig/baccy tax debate for ever and it's shocking the amount of non-smokers who bleat on about how much smokers cost the tax payer/NHS - when they have not a clue.

Excellent post - I may not always agree with you -but on this one - it would be sheer folly not to.

I were walking down the street once and I passed a smoker and he blew smoke and I smelt the smoke and now I think I might die.

GIVE THEM THE CHAIR.
