Ultimate first world problem scenario right here but I'm really indecisive and need the opinions of others etc. Here's the situation:
I've been invited to 3 different parties in 2 different cities on the 12th of October. I don't know which one to go to. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. Here's the breakdown: 1) Flat warming in Glasgow - two girls I know are having a flat warming and I've been invited. I don't have many friends left in Glasgow because most of mine graduated last year, so this is a fantastic chance to go make some new friends. I could go straight after work and would have a great time. On the down side, my ex will be there and I can't be assed with that but I'd still have a really great time despite that. 2) Flat party in Aberdeen - two of my best friends share a flat and are having a party that night at home. All of my friend group will be going so it would be a nice time to go home for the weekend - go to a party, spend some time with the family, but I would have to take the weekend off work. I have asked my manager if that would hypothetically be possible and he said yes. 3) Birthday party in Aberdeen - one of my closest friends (not part of my friend group) is having her birthday party that night. Every year since we turned 18 I have never been able to go to her birthday parties, either because I've been down in Glasgow or, one time, I went home but the plan changed and it was on a different night instead so I still wasn't there. I feel really bad because this will be the 5th year running I've not been able to attend the birthday party if I don't go - I'd have to take the weekend off but it would be a great time to go home, spend some time at home, go to the birthday party and finally make an appearance after all these years. The real problem is that if I do go home, I still have to face choosing between the two and I think either one would be great but the host of the other one would be upset if I came home and didn't show up to their event; meanwhile if I go to the one in Glasgow, the birthday girl would be really annoyed (she's been texting me every day demanding I come and it's getting a bit annoying at this point but I know it's only because she really wants me to be there) and I'd miss out on seeing all of my best friends in favour of going to a flat warming where I know some people but none of them particularly well... then again, if I go to the flat warming, I could make some new friends and get to know people a bit better, and it's convenient in that I can just go straight from work and I won't miss anything... What should I do!? |

Why not go home, go to the friend you always mug off for a bit and make an appearance and then go to the other. That way you don't let anyone down.

Solution - go to Location 1 and stick around until your ex turns up and then make a quick getaway to Aberdeen go to Location 2 for a couple of hours then say you have to leave early because you have to Work tomorrow and then go to Location 3 and spend the rest of the night there

That wouldn't fly, she's the kind of person who would be upset if you left her party to go to another one lol, I'd have to do it the other way round - but then it's a 7 hour round trip to go up to Aberdeen and back down to Glasgow and I don't really want to miss a weekend of work because I really do need to work all the hours I can get... like, I could in theory just get Saturday night off to go home but I can't be assed with 7 hours on a Megabus just to keep up appearances... Ugh so annoying

I'd go with the third myself, given how you've missed the last five years I'm sure she'd really appreciate it

Option 2 sounds like the least effort and most enjoyment. Or you could come round to mine. I'll get some booze in, make a curry and we can watch some excellent DVDs. That way you piss off everyone but me... which is just how it should be.

and on a serious note, pick the party you feel you will have most fun at and go to that one, don't be guilt tripped into going to one just because you haven't been able to go before. With the two that you can't go to, just arrange to meet for drinks or lunch or something on another weekend, lets face it the host of the party never gets much time to sit around at chatting at any rate so that way you can really catch up so that can be your fall back line.

Just do option 2. Flat warming with most people you don't know sounds like a hassle and it will be too hard to get away from one Glasgow party to go to the other one, better to stay in one place and not have to worry about it

That was my thought as well, never mind this trying to please everyone, in a situation like this the only one to please is yourself

Demand friends #1 and #2 change their plans to accommodate you. Then go to the birthday and the others
