Welsh and Proud

Hi forum, posted that thread about least favourite sports and it got me thinking about womens football. Now, I quite enjoy the women's football when it's on however my wife says "It's not quite right seeing women playing football. The same for womens rugby."
My wife is by no means sexist, she think it's great that women can play any sport they want but when watching she still can't take it seriously as men's football or mens rugby. I guess we are from a generation that has grown up seeing football and rugby predominately as male sports - it's strange for some of us to see women playing it. That said I'd find it strange watching men's netball or volleyball. What is everyone's opinion on this? Would be interesting to know. R. |

I think it's pretty sexist to say it's not right for women to play any sport at all and it's quite insulting to the women who play them and train hard for them

Good point Niamh. I don't think my wife means that it's wrong that they're playing and shouldn't be allowed to . I just think she means that it looks strange for her and she can't enjoy it as much. Maybe it is indeed a bit of prejudice though. I understand where she is coming from but at the same time I agree with you also. R.

I don't know why it would bother anyone. If you watch it because you enjoy the sport then I don't see why it matters who's playing as long as they're good at it (which I'd guess professional women footballers are?) So if someone only wants to watch men play it, I dunno, I think a lot of men grow up identifying with footballers or wanting to be footballers, so seeing women play it better than they could might be a threatening thing for them? And I think some men definitely feel emasculated seeing women who are better/more powerful than they are, whereas others don't. And maybe for women who don't like watching it it's just a reverse case of that, that they identify with women who are stereotypically 'weaker', so it makes them uncomfortable? I don't know, I've never enjoyed football regardless of gender lol, but like I said if people like it just for the sport that it is then I can't think why else gender would even come into it. Unless women players really aren't any good at it for whatever reason even at professional level?

I used to play football and loved it,much rather play it than watch it,not been so active with it for a while now mainly due to a bad ham string injury, I also like playing cricket, but hate watching it.

Not only played football at school, we played in mixed teams.
Great fun, same as the cricket. Great game, good fun and exercise for all. |

Enjoyed watching the world cup because of how open and unpredictable it was (not to mention we finished third)... whilst I'll always prefer the skill and quality of the men's game it's a fun alternative and just as enjoyable to me.

I prefer the men's football because the hype and excitement around it is what makes it so enjoyable . The atmosphere in the streets and pubs what a joy . However it is nice with the ladies football as it is unpredictable like you said . It's a nice contrast . R. |
