Season 8 of Game Of Thrones will be debuting in a couple of months time, and as it will be soon coming to it's end I wanted to ask you this question.

Some spoilers are ahead for people that have not caught up yet.

Which period of Game Of Thrones was your favourite period of the show out of seasons 1-4 or seasons 5-7? I'm asking it like this as seasons 1-4 followed a loose path of George R.R Martin's storylines from the books, whilst 5-7 had to start slowly paving their own path due to catching up with the book material for the most part.

For me I'm a fan of the first 4 seasons as you can tell that it was an adaptation of a book series, it has more structure and the characters are better written and just generally used better imo in the first 4 seasons I feel. Where as 5-7 has had the odd superb episode imo, in fact some of the standout episodes may individually be better than any of the episodes of the first 4 seasons, however there are things that I think the TV Writers have ****ed up imo, the Jon and Daenarys relationship is just morally disgusting in my view and I'm not normally the moral police but to have two of your main heroes in a relationship like that is just vile (an overused word I know) and the fact that she cares about Jon Snow more than one of her Dragons getting killed after only knowing him for a few weeks is just baffling writing, it exposes the TV Writers and the show at not being very strong at starting up a predominant protagonist relationship imo. Cersei's writing has gone off the boil imo (although tbf a lot of book fans say the same thing about her going downhill in the books) so it might be harsh to attack the show for this one, but her writing in the last three seasons went completely cartoonishly evil imo when in the first 4 seasons there were more layers to Cersei's character, thankfully the actress still does a good enough job to make Cersei still come off as an iconic character for the programme. And the later on seasons do seem to just be obsessed with Jon Snow, he gets most of the big episodes nowadays and most of the screentime in most of the episodes when the show is suppose to be an ensemble, the only other characters that still get much to do that's any good nowadays away from Jon Snow imo goes to Arya and Sansa which thank god as I don't necessarily watch Game Of Thrones for Jon Snow.

Oh and the Books and the Show definitely want to take responsibility for The Sparrow storyline.

Anyway rant over about my opinion, I do wanna be reading yours.

Seasons 1-5 followed the books. I wouldn't say the path was that loose either, there were a few time saving changes is all.

It's hard to say which i preferred really, for me Season 6 was interesting to watch because it was the first Season where I didn't know what was going to happen plus it's always good when the story starts coming together and you start getting answers.

Only from Season 6 onwards though. The changes aren't huge though, really just time savers, because obviously they're big ass books with a **** load more characters I think GRRM advised the writers after that on most of the very important parts of the story Jon and Dany especially, I'm pretty sure that would have happened in the books too(or will happen if the ****er every finishes them)

Also, I'm pretty sure that GRR Martin was going to have Jon and Danerys together and told the show writers that? It was always leading that way because of the of the fact that they're related, the history Targaryens have of marrying siblings, the fact that the series is called a Song of Ice and Fire, implies Jon and Danerys.

The Sparrow was already written about as well in the books

I'm thinking that GRR Martin wouldn't have had them be Aunt and Nephew to each other, and I'd like to think that he wouldn't have Daenarys caring more for Jon than one of her Dragons dying.

You clearly haven't read the books then because he'd been hinting at that literally from Book 1. People had figured out that they were aunt and nephew long before there was ever a TV series

Why would he want such a revolting storyline to go ahead!?

It completely lowers the tone and quality of the programme imo which for the most part has been top notch.

I mean the reveal related to so much more than just the fact that they're related and now shagging It meant :

- Jon was actually a stronger heir to the Throne than Danerys being the son of Rhaegar
- Ned never actually cheated on Catelyn but went through his whole life letting her think he did to protect Jon and his promise to his sister
- It's also interesting to see what his relationship with the Dragons will now be aswell.


You don't know GRRM if you think incest and weird goings on are not his thing...........they really are

I think they're trying to show us that they have an instant bond because of how connected they are, also Dany has form for caring deeply about people even over her dragons. She locked two of them in that castle when she saw they were a danger to people

To me it just feels like the writers are pandering to the shippers and completely chucking Daenarys character development and bond with her Dragons out of the window.

And chaining the Dragons up to protect people is different to having sex with someone and caring more about his safety over a Dragon that she's looked after for a few years and raised the Dragon through it's childhood.

I never thought that I'd ever type that out about a Dragon on here.

Totally disagree, look here's what GRRM said about them back in Season 1, I mean this sort of warped s**t is exactly what he would write, I have no doubt it was his idea :

“When we were shooting Season 1 and no one had seen the show yet, we were in Malta. Back then, there was not a lot of secrecy because nobody was paying attention, and George R.R. Martin came to visit and he was being quite open about his plans,” Taylor told the New York Times.

“He said something: That it really is all about Dany and Jon. I was surprised because at the time, you know, I thought, well Robb Stark’s going to be king next, probably,” he continued. “And who knows where this story’s going? But it was absolutely clear to him that within this sprawling scale the whole story was coming down to this partnership.”

And while the romance between the two heroes hasn’t yet been explicitly stated on the series, Taylor confirmed that viewers have something to look forward to.

“But yeah, it’s gonna happen,” he told the Times.

Perhaps their romance isn’t as pure as some would expect. Last season the show revealed that Jon is not Ned Stark’s illegitimate son, rather the son of Ned’s sister Lyanna. And fans have theorized — and the show has heavily hinted — that Jon’s father is Rhaegar Targaryen, who is Daenerys’ eldest brother.

When asked about “the incest thing” between the two of them, Taylor said: “Oh, you know, it’s worked for Cersei and Jaime. Nothing went wrong there.”

The finale of Game of Thrones‘ seventh season airs Aug. 27 at 9 p.m. on HBO.

5-7 has been better for action but 1-4 was far more gripping and consistent to watch. All amazing though.

As far as I know, GRRM informed the writers of major plot elements (major battles, character deaths, the undead dragon, etc.) so that it wouldn't stray too far from his story, so it's likely that the Jon and Dany storyline is one of those...

As to the thread question; it's a tough call really. The early seasons were much better in terms of character development and political intrigue, the latter ones much better in terms of increasing the dramatic pace and action sequences. I wouldn't say either is better or worse, really... the reason the action in latter seasons has impact is because of the character development from earlier seasons, and likewise, 8 seasons all at a slow / political pace wouldn't have worked and it needed to eventually build to a larger conclusion.

I guess compare it to LOTR; you start with a lot of in depth description of the settings, a smaller number of characters all banded together, small individual stories and then by the end you have the huge, sweeping battles. It's the same sort of thing really.

I think they illustrate the whole thing well with Jamie and Tyrion's relationship. They like each other, as brothers they're good "friends", they laugh and enjoy each other's company every time they meet. But they have thus far very rarely found themselves on the same side when it comes to war / the bigger picture.

I have a theory why the Jon/Danerys love story is vital to how the story ends and not just a lets cave to the Shippers type thing

I think that Jon will turn out to be The Prince that was promised/Azor Ahai (his is the song of Ice and Fire is a quote related to him which would fit with Jon since his dad would be fire and his mother Ice as he's half Tragaryen and half Stark) He will have to forge the sword (lightbringer) to kill the white walkers and save everyone but like the original Azor Ahai had to kill his wife and use her blood to make the sword, Jon will have to kill Dany to make his. I think she will sacrifice herself rather than him just killing her

What's the best season? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't season 4 its peak? Everyone was talking about it back in 2014. Joffrey's hatred was at an all time high
