The same goes for Hollywood really. A large number of male stars who are big names in their early years continue to front big movies well into middle age. Women - even prominent ones - are usually relegated to character / supporting roles .
But who knows what the solution is there... it's a societal issue. What sells, sells and it can't be forced .

Yeah I agree . I think tv presenters , tv judges and news readers struggle the most .
When I think of news readers there's alot of old MALE presenters that have been on our screens since beginning of time AKA the originals ie Trevor McDonald was still doing the news , now he does his own documentry specials , Huw Edwards still on our screens ,Harry gration etc . And usually they get younger female co presenters .
But female news readers that get long in the tooth get replaced ie Anna Ford & Moira Stewart etc .
And even with The apprentice Sugar's aide Margaret got replaced by Karen
And with strictly come dancing Arlene was originally replaced by Alesha who's much younger .
I don't think the movie actreses have the same struggle, look at the success of legendary thesbyians like Helen Mirren , Maggie Smith ,Judi Dench , Julie Walters .
They've had plenty of leading roles, and they're bound to play supporting roles once in a while
