I could see mgmt treating people who try to take time off during/around scheduled trips/conferences as a major "faux pas".

"You didn't seem as enthusiastic this month about work outside of work as you did last month, Mike... Gosh, we're just not that into you anymore... *shows them the door*"

it reminds me of a tv series where people were scored by their neighbours etc and that determined their standing in society. I't's the next step surely
