Surely either because he thought it would be good for his career, or it could be something more clinical akin to Factitious Disorder (aka Munchausen's Syndrome), or in other words, he felt he was chronically lacking in positive attention and created a victim narrative to counter that (as assault victims are usually offered a lot of love and support).
If it's the latter it's sad, but still incredibly damaging. |

It just makes it more difficult for actual victims of such crimes and made himself look foolish
