It wasn't an unbelievable story to the police investigating it for weeks before the new facts came to light. If you think that you, a british person who has no connection to the Chicago police and thus no real knowledge of the inner workings of the case beyond what was being reported somehow had some sort of knowledge that trumped all that... Well, I don't need to state how ridiculous that would be, do I?
The only reason to doubt the story before the narrative changed after the 'attackers' were apprehended was because you didn't want to believe it, thus your biases swayed your thoughts on the matter.
