Default Double-barrelled surnames

Anyone got any strong thoughts on that in this day and age? Would you rather one partner took on your family name exclusively in marriage or is double-barrelled the way to go?

Whatever suits.
You can keep your maiden name when married, or double barrel it.
Funny enough I was just wondering what my daughter would do if she ever gets married, she will keep her maiden name in her work either way I reckon.

Just keep it the way it is as it works and don't dick around to make some futile point

Personal preference surely... why should it matter to anyone but the couple? Most married people I know have still "gone with tradition"... though I know one couple who double-barrelled (a gay couple, where it seems to be more common) and also I know two married couple where neither changed their name... they still have different surnames. One of the couples has children and they're double-barrelled.

Not all cultures do it though. Did you know that?

Actually two of my best friends did neither, they just kept their own name as did their husbands, one has no kids and the other double barrelled her kids names

ex mrs LT still uses my surname but do women ever revert back when divorced if they have children?

I would. Infact if I had my time over I probably would have just kept my name eventhough I prefer Gavins surname

So only the British way is efficient in your eyes? Got it.

I have three gay friends of who have each married and double-barrelled their surname. When I was growing up there were a couple of kids who had a double-barrelled surname because their parents weren't married.

doesn't the whole concept fall apart when you have generations all double barrelled .... i would never remember anyone's name

for example angela smythe-williamson marries rodney trottenham-spalling so Angela becomes Smyth-wliiamson-trottenham-spalling .... and then on to the kids getting married

I'd imagine if you had kids you would just take one of the names from each person to make a new one, it couldn't work otherwise. I think that's what they do in Spain

ETA : John Smith-Jones and Jane Collins-Roche have a child and call her Sophie Jones-Collins

I use my own name professionally, but for everything else I'm happy to use my husband's name.
