Why So Serious?
|
I've been spending lockdown watching one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows of all time. I'd watched a few clips on YT and the pilot episode years ago, but other than that I'm completely new to this show. I've heard so many amazing things about this show and it always appears on 'best TV shows of all time' lists.
I'd started this 2 weeks ago and have been meaning to make a thread but I kept forgetting, plus I didn't think I'd watch more than 1 season. I have a bad habit of watching one season of a show, finishing it, forgetting about it, and then just completely losing interest in carrying on. Although surprisingly I haven't done that this time. I finished season 1 last weekend, and have been watching season 2. I'd just watched episode 5 last night and thought it'd be a good time to finally make this thread. Hopefully I'll be able to finish this show within the next 3-4 weeks. I'm enjoying it so much so far. Feel free to share your thoughts as I go along. No spoilers please though. |

My season 1 thoughts.
What an incredible first season this was! From the pilot episode I was completely hooked throughout. Each episode was better than the last, and there wasn't even one boring episode at all. Poor Walter, you really feel sorry for him, the desperation and determination that he feels to financially provide for and secure his family's well-being after learning he has lung cancer and not long to live is heartbreaking. I like the relationship between him and Jesse. At first it's only business between them, but as time goes on they slowly build a bond between them, almost a father-son bond. They still argue every now and then, but they care deeply for each other, a perfect example being when Walter gets revenge on Tuco Salamanca after he beats Jesse to a bloody pulp after a drug deal gone wrong. Speaking of Tuco, what an incredible character he is. He's such a terrifying, unpredictable, hilarious, compelling mess. I couldn't believe it when he beat the **** out of one of his men in the last episode just because he spoke out of line. That was completely unexpected. The look of shock and horror on Walt and Jesse's face said it all, they didn't know what they were getting themselves into. The scenes with Krazy-8 were so powerful to watch, when Walt and Jesse imprisoned him in Jesse's basement for several days as they ponder what to do with him after he tried to kill them. It was quite a touching moment when Walt revealed to him that he had cancer. I'd imagine Walt was dying (pun intended) to tell someone, anyone, no matter who they were. The fact he was more comfortable to tell Krazy-8 first rather than his family said it all about his character. It must've been extremely difficult for Walt, debating on whether or not he should kill Krazy-8. I wouldn't know what to do with him too if i were in his shoes. No way would someone like him just let you go after what you put him through, and it was confirmed when he tried to kill Walt after he was gonna free him. Walt did the right thing killing him in the end. So, that's my thoughts for the first series. My favourites are Walter, Jesse and Hank. |

Same here Tony, I mostly got into it to get through work at home but then I realized immediately from like episode 1 that I LOVE this show
S1 > S2 so far tho but both amazing. Something about the intro to the story is just fantastic. But I think S2 episode 8, which I just watched today, was excellent! And I hear it only gets better in seasons 4 & 5

If you finish it and love it, you'll like Better Call Saul too! (IMO I've enjoyed it more, despite loving Breaking Bad)

Perhaps longer with current events, and the fact the season will be 13 episodes long

Watched episode 6 last night and it's easily the best episode yet! My, oh my what an absolute rollercoaster of an episode. After Skinny Pete, one of Jesse's friends and dealers, is robbed by a drug addicted couple, Walter gives Jesse a gun and tells him to deal with it. Jesse breaks into their home and whilst waiting for them to return, bonds with their neglected young son. Meanwhile, Walter has his own problem: Gretchen, his ex girlfriend and business partner, comes to his house. Skyler still thinks that Gretchen and Elliot are paying Walt's medical bills, although he's been lying to her and Gretchen. Him and Gretchen later talks things out.
What a disturbing and gripping episode this was. Jesse's relationship with the little kid was really sweet. He treated that kid better in that short time than his parents did their whole life. Amazing acting from that couple, they made me believe they were really drug addicts. The ending where the wife kills her husband was so disturbing and uncomfortable, came out of nowhere. ''I ain't no skank'' will stay with me forever. The end of this episode almost made me cry when Jesse took the kid outside and said "Hope you have a good life." The scenes with Walt and Gretchen was also amazing. Easily the best episode yet! |

Yas that episode I remember distinctly on my first watch was the moment I loved the show more .
If there's one (of several) things the second season has over the first, it's how much it expanded on Jesse rather than how he was mostly a comic relief sidekick in the first season and not much else. |

After the strong second half I'll definitely give the edge to Season 2 over 1. I just still love the way the story was introduced in S1 in every episode tho so that'll always be special to me for this series. Season 3 is ok so far. Started strong I think the first 2 episodes & then the last 2 have been ehhh ok. On episode 5 of S3 now. Might post some thoughts on S2 in detail later (in spoilers of course since Tony hasn't got to it yet)

Ahhhh Danny Trejo's character's decapitated head mounted on top of a tortoise, followed by a bomb strapped to it exploding, killing the agents, with one having his leg blown off. So relieved Hank moved away from it just in time. And not Skyler about to cheat on Walt. I hope not.
