We actually went to Portugal when my kids were 4 and 2... The furthest we went was lying out on the balcony of the villa at night looking at the stars when they were asleep in the next room. Granted, being in The Algarve with two small kids, we did have the Maddie cautionary tale on our minds, but I don't know any parent who would actually go out for dinner at any distance and leave their kids alone. As is frequently pointed out - so many things could happen. What if there was a fire? Etc.
Its no different to a parent in the UK leaving their kids at home and going to the pub at the end of the street. No one would try to justify that.

I’m not sure what time of the year she went missing but It’s scary to think that we were on holiday in Lagos with our little kids that summer with that guy seemingly living (and preying ) in the area .
