If you have more of an issue with the statue of a slave owner being destroyed then it being there in the first place, then you’re exactly the problem.

Maybe we should burn down all the Stately Homes as well as they treated people like slaves

The statue was unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Bristol on 13 November 1895. Until the 1990s, Colston's involvement in the slave trade, the source of much of the money which he bestowed in Bristol, went largely unremarked.

oh a very recent gorification then

Leave the plynth up and have plaque explaining what the statue used to be and why it was torn down, much more symbolic.

Ploughing medicine full of cocaine used to be legal, so let's pop up a statue of Escobar

I'm not sure there's a definitively right or wrong way to look at it as it comes down to personal beliefs, but if I was black person having to walk past that statue everyday on my way to work, having already grown up in a country full of racism, then I'd feel some type of way about it.

the right thing to do would have been to ask the people of Bristol democratically if they wanted the statue removed, not taking unilateral destructive action.

He supported and endowed schools, almshouses, hospitals and churches in Bristol, London and elsewhere. Many of his charitable foundations continue

the group who sent him to a watery grave need to seek out these charitable foundations and shut them down yes? the hospitals, schools and churches too, lets not leave a stone unturned in this quest ….

He funded those places from slavery income? I can’t believe you’re actually defending that. The argument you’re building is grotesque.

I wonder if we all were upset when the Military tore down Saddam’s statue in Iraq?

Or was it celebrated instead?

Correct me if I’m wrong Samm, but isn’t there a hall named after him that’s going to be changing their name soon?

Yes the colston concert hall It has been going through a re-vamp since 2017. Meant to be re-opening this year with a new name that’s being decided through the bristol music trust. Think they’re asking the people of bristol to decide.

Default George Floyd killed by the police

Slight tangent but just wondering who decides who gets to use the megaphones in all the different groups of protesters ??
