History has more interesting things like Vikings, Normans, Romans, Tudors, Stuarts, Oliver Cromwell, and a couple of world wars. There's no real need to carp on about why Brits should hate themselves

Why is it not interesting? We learn about the American slave trade and their civil war, why shouldn’t we learn about our involvement?

Teaching generations of kids a skewed version of our history is so harmful, they end up being ignorant and think British racism isn’t a far felt thing

The slave trade was a larger part of American history, and played a central role in their civil war. While some Brits did have slaves, it wasn't as much of "a thing" in Britain and wasn't tied into our history, i.e. in the same way it was involved in their war. You can't teach about the American Civil War without bringing slavery into it.

But it wasn't an integral part of our history, unless we're counting when virtually everyone in the British Isles were the slaves of the Romans

Right and as proven today, we can’t teach about the success of some major British cities without discussing the slave trade either, so why not teach about it?

If we want to move forward and have people understand the history of British racism and oppression, we can’t continue to hide away from out historic atrocities, teaching people that Churchill was nothing more than a hero, is intellectually incorrect and that’s just for starters, we shouldn’t be hiding our past.

Churchill wasnt perfect (who is) but he is the reason people can do what they are doing by protesting today

Why do we need to teach the history of British racism and oppression? Like, maybe in PSHE lol, but there's so much more interesting history to teach. I get your point about British cities, but unless I slept through it there wasn't a lesson about the formation of Bristol

Slavery was just background noise, Britain today wouldn't be any different if they were paid servants doing the work. Whereas who knows what America would be like today if the Civil War hadn't happened.

It won't change anything going forward. I think everyone acknowledges Churchill had some views which are now a bit dodgy, but it's just churlish to define him by those views alone when he led the country to victory in WWII.

Just because something isn’t interesting, doesn’t mean it’s not important to learn

And it’s not just about his personal views, his orders lead to the genocide of nearly 3 million Bengali Indians, he ordered the province to not be helped when they were facing famine, yes he got us through the war, but that doesn’t mean all his other actions should be forgotten about

Birmingham was a great example to the protesting from what I see and hear it was all done very peacefully so it can be done

Why do you think it's important to learn? No-one thinks it was all daisies and cupcakes anyway, so what would it achieve? Even the likes of Tommy Robinson don't wanna bring slavery back

You're asking what it would achieve to learn about the history of the human race on this planet?

Slavery... back? You say that as if slavery doesn't exist anymore. So that there is reason number 1 for you to educate yourself.

Because it’s the history of our country, we shouldn’t just learn the good or ‘interesting’ bits, skewing history isn’t cute, it does a disservice

More reason that statues like the one that was brought down today should stay up, we cant sanitise the past....in the future things that are quite acceptable today will no longer be...

Statues of people are put up to celebrate them, that’s the whole point of statues

No, because if people were taught about all of these things in school, there wouldn’t be a need to keep statues erected that were made to celebrate these people, statues aren’t educational, they’re commemorative

I do feel there is a difference between knowing and teaching our history, and maintaining monuments to it.

No one puts up a statue of Hitler in Trafalgar square to remind us simultaneously of our darkest days, and our greatest triumph.
